Combat Designer

Full-time position in Irvine, California.

At the heart of Notorious' first game is the combat system. The paramount pillar for our game is literally "Combat is King"! We're seeking a highly-skilled, well-rounded game designer who can specialize in combat systems. Deep understanding of what makes combat-heavy games such as Street Fighter or Dark Souls special, including the inner workings of esoteric combat design elements such as hit-frames, animation canceling and more.


What project you'd be working on


We're currently building a new core fantasy RPG game for PC/Console using Unreal 5. Elements of this project include open worlds, core RPG fantasy theme, PvPvE, third-person action-based combat, player stories, and engaging systems. It's still very early and anything can change, which you can be a part of.

Notorious Studios is a venture-backed start-up founded by core developers from Blizzard Entertainment who worked on titles like World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch.

Responsibilities


  • Ability to take ownership of the combat system, defining its vision, look and feel

  • Lead a small cross-disciplinary team (4-6 people) to build systems and mechanics that achieve product goals, including animators and gameplay engineers

  • Create and provide multiple potential designs and solutions. Articulate trade-offs and risks between different options

  • Playtest the game and help push for continued improvements of existing design and fresh prototypes


Required Qualifications


  • 4 years experience in professional Game Design

  • 2 years of experience in either Combat Mechanics or Combat Feel

  • You have demonstrated proficiency in scripting in at least one engine in a shipped title

  • Design flexibility conducive to working on all facets of a game

  • Deep critical thinking capability who can draw on a wealth of knowledge and examples of games you've played or built through the years

  • Ability to work without a producer to self-manage yourself and scope projects and features

  • Strong analytical skills that aid in understanding and articulating what makes games great

  • Solid team player. Either you work on a small team already, or are excited to work on a small, scrappy, tight-knit group

  • Passion and love for games


Ideally, you have:


  • 5+ years of professional game development

  • Hands-on experience with and strong understanding of Unreal

  • Experience working on a live multiplayer PvP game title

  • Passion in RPG and core fantasy worlds

  • A track record of designing and implementing deep and engaging combat systems

  • Deep knowledge of combat-heavy games such as Dark Souls, Street Fighter, Smash Brothers, Dark Souls, God of War etc.

  • Deep knowledge of spell-based combat games such as DOTA, League of Legends, or  World of Warcraft

  • The ability to derive insight from complex data sets and leverage that insight to tune and balance a variety of game systems
